Launched in 1931, this three-masted sailing ship is renowned for its elegant design, intricate details, and classic sailing rig, which make it a symbol of both Italian excellence and historical pride. Its motto, "Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera" ("Not he who begins, but he who perseveres"), perfectly shows the spirit of dedication and endurance that defines Italian ingenuity. From its hand-crafted wooden interiors to the gleaming brass fittings, every aspect of the Amerigo Vespucci reflects the timeless artistry that Italy is known for.
Twenty years after its last circumnavigation, on July 1, 2023, the Amerigo Vespucci set sail for a new extraordinary journey around the world, which will last 20 months.
SEA takes pride in recalling its contribution to the modernization of the “Queen of the Seas” in 2015. The Vespucci, the oldest ship in the Italian Navy, continues to serve as a training vessel, educating Navy cadets and young members of sailing associations.
The modernization project included the renewal of the main engines, electric generators, and propulsion system, along with a complete overhaul of the ship’s interiors. Special attention was given to improving onboard living conditions and sustainability: waste compactors, composting systems, and an eco-friendly antifouling treatment were installed, making the Vespucci the first sustainable training ship.
For SEA, taking part in this project remains a great source of pride. The company supplied a dual pair of dry-type cast resin transformers for the power supply system of the upgraded primary distribution network and integrated electric propulsion system.
Technical specifications of the supplied transformers:
- Power rating: 500 (2x250) kVA
- Primary voltage: 380 V
- Secondary voltage: 2x720 V
- Vector group: D±7.5°
- Frequency: 50 Hz
The Amerigo Vespucci is more than just a training ship for the Italian Navy - it’s a floating masterpiece that showcases Italy’s craftsmanship, maritime tradition, and artistic heritage.
Long live the Vespucci!
